Outdoor / Public Fiber Installation Brush Creek Kansas City, Missouri

Images of salmon swimming upstream during the salmon run undulate just below the surface of the water in Brush Creek, as digitally printed imagery on nylon fiber. This fiber installation awakens our imagination of the liveliness of our natural environment with the spirit of parallel lives like those of salmon. The salmon run on the west coast, embodies the vitality of the natural world, and although not found in Missouri, accentuate our awareness of life in creeks and streams. The life of the stream resonates into our being. However, wildlife are disappearing from our creeks because of the degradation of their habitat due to agricultural and industrial pollution. This parallels the decreasing quality of our natural environment, and consequently endangers our health as well.

This was a temporary fiber installation on the surface of the water of Brush Creek in Kansas City, Missouri. There were two 25 foot printed panels connected in a linear strip, floating in Brush Creek. This fiber was just below the surface of the water so that the imagery appeared to be "in the water" and undulates with the river currents. The installation was visible from the bridge and the sidewalk along side of the creek, near an outdoor shopping area. No materials or chemicals were released into the water as a result of this installation.

Medium: Digitally printed banner material backed by 1/8 inch close cell foam. Imagery is of Salmon swimming upstream during a Salmon Run in Alaska photographed by the artist.

Size: The two panels are each 48 inches wide by 25 feet long. The installation is 50 feet long.
